Our Story

Bubby Gruman provides the inspiration for everything we do at Gruman's Extraordinary Catering. Bubby's gift to the world wasn't to scale Mt. Everest, write the next great novel or become CEO of the world's largest company. Her gift came in the form of her creativity in the kitchen. Whether it was following a time-honoured family recipe to the letter or experimenting with a dish that inspired her on her many trips around the world, Bubby Gruman was all about food. She still is. Her knowledge, passion and expertise are something that were passed down to her by her mother and grandmother. She, in turn, passed them down to her son, Peter Fraiberg.

Peter moved to Calgary in 1980 with a small suitcase, a handful of his family's best recipes and a desire to someday run his own restaurant.

He started out humbly working in a restaurant, watching, learning and growing. Within a decade, Peter started Savoir Fare Gourmet Foods and he opened one of Calgary's greatest culinary landmarks, Savoir Fare.

In 2001, at the peak of its success, Peter sold the enterprise. His new dream was to create truly memorable dining experiences that would never have to be anchored by a particular time or place. That quest resulted in Gruman's Extraordinary Catering.

For the first time in his life Peter had what he was looking for - an opportunity to create fare and cuisine for any occasion, at any time, in any location. He named his new enterprise Gruman's Extraordinary Catering in honour of his mother, Bubby Gruman. Peter carries the same love and passion for fine food as Bubby. To him, it's as natural as breathing.

Peter's love of travel is something he also inherited from his mom. This passion has taken him to some of the world's most amazing locales and with it, the opportunity to sample the inspiration of local chefs who share Peter's love and obsession with food. His travels have resulted in fresh new ideas being brought to your table right here in Calgary.
